The Taraba state government has
confirmed the outbreak of Lassa fever, a deadly viral disease in the state.
According to medical experts, Lassa
fever is transmitted by infected rodents. The state commissioner of health
further stated that:
“People usually get infected with
Lassa virus after exposure to infected rodents, while person to person
transmission occurs through direct contact with the sick person.”
He also said that precautionary
measures which include putting food in rodent proof containers and wearing
protections such as masks, gloves, gowns among others should be followed.
Official reports on Tuesday
stated that 3 out of the 5 people quarantined with the fever had died.
