Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, has called up 24 players to feature in the November 13 and November 17, two-legged 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Swaziland; and
there are two surprise inclusions!
The most prominent of the new inclusions is Obafemi
Martins who has been in magnificent form for his MLS clubside in the United States - Seattle Sounders FC - but has not played for Nigeria since 2013. The second
surprise inclusion is the call-up of Nigerian/Manchester City
teenage sensation, Kelechi
Iheanacho, who had a massive impact when he was handed his full Man City senior
debut in Wednesday’s 5-1 Capital One victory over Crystal Palace. This call-up
to the Super Eagles would mark Iheanacho’s senior debut after he was discovered at
the U17 World Cup in 2013 where he inspired Nigeia to the gold medal.
Six players from the Nigerian Premier league also got the nod. They are: Sunshine stars goalkeeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa; Enugu Rangers defender, Kalu Orji; Sharks FC defender, Chima Akas; Abia Warriors defender, Austin Oboroakpo; Sunshine stars midfielder, Paul Onobi; and Enyimba FC forward, Ezekiel Bassey.
Carl Ikeme (goalkeeper, Wolverhampton FC of England); Dele Alampasu (goalkeeper, Club de Sportivo Feirense of Portugal); Abdullahi Shehu (defender, Uniao da Madeira of Portugal); Elderson Echiejile (defender, AS Monaco of France); Leon Balogun (defender, FSV Mainz of Germany); Godfrey Oboabona (defender, Caykur Rizespor of Turkey); and Efe Ambrose (defender, Celtic FC of Scotland).
Others include: Ogenyi Onazi (Midfielder, SS Lazio of Italy), John Mikel Obi (Midfielder, Chelsea FC of England); Rabiu Ibrahim (Midfielder, AS Trencin of Slovakia); Wilfred Ndidi (Midfielder, KRC Genk of Belgium) and Sylvester Igbonu (Midfielder, FC UFA of Russia)
Forwards include: Ahmed Musa (CSKA Moscow of Russia); Moses Simon ( KAA Gent of Belgium); Odion Ighalo (Watford FC of England); Alex Iwobi (Arsenal FC of England).
All players are expected to arrive Abuja on November 8. The first leg of the qualifier would be played in Lobamba, Swaziland on November 13 while the return leg would be at the Adokiye Amiesiamaka stadium in Port Harcourt on November 17.
We wish the Super Eagles all the best.
