More than 100 firefighters and emergency personnel, more than 30 fire trucks and other emergency equipment responded to the scene as the Fire Dept NY sounded a third alarm after the collapse.
A radio dispatcher, taking reports from the field, said a survey of the buildings in the immediate area found them all to be safe and stable.
Photos from the scene showed part of the twisted metal of the long, red-coloured crane boom lying atop parked cars amid widely strewn debris.
