Agencies in the United Nations have warned that poor harvests across much of southern
Africa means that nearly 30 million people will struggle to get adequate
nutrition in the months ahead, according to the Associated Press news agency reports.
"Food insecurity" will be most acute in Malawi, Zimbabwe and Madagascar, which suffered extreme crop failures because of drought, the World Food Programme and Food and Agriculture Organization said in a joint statement.
They have revealed plans to step up assistance, citing data that shows there will be about 27.4 million people facing food insecurity in the region in the next six months. All hands technically must be on deck.
