The authorities of the University however, on Saturday, set up a panel to unravel the circumstances leading to the death of its former employee, Mr A. O. Subair.
According to reports, Subair, who was a lecturer II in the Department of Mathematics of the university, reportedly set his residence ablaze in the senior staff quarters on Phillipson Road, leading to his death.
Speaking with SUNDAY PUNCH, the Director of Public Communication, UI, Mr Olatunji Oladejo, said,
“The deceased lecturer resigned in 2011. As of the time of his death on Tuesday, he was no longer an employee of the institution.
“He was still living at the Flat 4, Phillipson Road of the university on compassionate ground. For now, it is unethical to say he committed suicide. We are yet to get the report of the preliminary investigation on his death.
“There was a fire incident in the apartment but the fire did not get to where he was sleeping. Maybe he suffocated in the process because there was no trace or signs that he was burnt in any part of his body.
“The firefighters who were alerted worked to put out the fire and later discovered a man lying lifeless on a bed within the apartment.
They moved him to Jaja Clinic but he was brought in dead, according to the doctor’s report. He did not commit suicide as being insinuated.”
