But before the age of Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat, there were other platforms that were popular and we used them as often as we could, or as long as the internet cafe stayed open. These are the four social media platforms that were popular back in the day:
1. MySpace. If you were past puberty in the early 2000s and you did not have a MySpace account, you probably did not exist. MySpace was the 'in thing' back in the day. There was no one without a MySpace account. It is probably the old version of Twitter only not as advanced with its features. With MySpace you could meet people, make friends and chat through direct messages.
2. Hi5. This was the second biggest social media platform after MySpace. Hi5 was was basically like Facebook; users created their own profiles, send friend requests and waited to be accepted or rejected before the conversations started. It was very cool. Back then, when you meet someone, they asked if you were on Hi5, and if you weren't.....well.
3. Yahoo Messenger. Yahoo introduced a messaging feature for all its members. It was a desktop application that allowed direct messaging between users and allowed the sharing of multimedia. It was another quick and easy way to communicate.
4. Friendster. Some call it the 'grandfather of social media.' Friendster was was a social networking site that allowed users to create networks by adding people and sharing anything of interest between them; photos, audio and videos. It was also very popular but now it has been turned into a gaming site.
