Yesterday, during his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Senate President Bukola Saraki was accused by the EFCC investigator, Michael
Wetkas, that he (Saraki) was receiving salaries for four years after
quitting office as governor of Kwara state.
This would mean the current Senate president was a ghost worker from June 2011 till 2015 when the payment stopped.
According to official records of the Kwara state government, Saraki's last payment as
governor was made in May 2011 (a little over N200,000) and starting June 2011, he was being paid his pension (N578,188.00) which he is entitled to as a former governor.
According to the law granting pension to past governors in the state
pension, reviewed by Saraki himself in 2010, he is entitled to the
following insane allowances and emoluments:
- Pension for life equivalent to incumbent salary
- A total of five cars, two replaceable every three years.
- Well furnished 5-bedroom duplex
- Furniture allowances: 300% of salary every two years
- Five pensionable domestic staff
- Eight policemen, three SSS operatives, one which must be a female
- Free medicals for governors and their families
- 30-day annual vacation abroad with 30-day estacodes
- Car maintenace: 30% of salary
- Utility: 20% of salary
- Entertainment: 10% of salary
- House maintenance: 10% of salaries
In total, the monies being paid Saraki as pension reached to above N1 million per month.
The outrage is that Bukola Saraki was receiving this whopping amount for these four years in which he was a senator receiving his salary concurrently.
