The students of the University of Lagos today went head to head with the police and the university authorities as they refused to leave the school premises following an order by the authorities for them to do so.
The directive by the school authorities was as a result of the persistent protests by the students body led by the University of Lagos Student Union (ULSU). The students have been protesting the lack of basic ammenities particularly light and potable water in the school hostels and premises as well as other difficulties occasioned by the nationwide fuel scarcity.
The school authorities decided that the best solution to these problems was to send a memo
directing the immediate closure of the school and stoppage of all academic activities, starting today, Friday, April 8, 2016 until situation in the country improves.
The students however were having none of it and refused to go home. The police were called by the school authorities to control the situation but the students managed to push the police outside the main gates and barricaded the gates.
As the 10AM deadline reached, students and workers were seen carrying their belongings and leaving the school premises via other ways such as bush paths.
