It's no longer news that Ahmed Musa has handed over the captaincy of the Nigeria Super Eagles to Midfielder, John Mikel Obi. This was disclosed to the public during Thursday's Pre-match Press conference for today's AFCON 2017 Qualifiers match against Egypt.
The teams's interim coach, Samson Siasia has now come out to reveal the reason behind the change of team leader in an interview with ESPN. He disclosed that he informed both players about his decision on
Wednesday night, telling ESPN FC that he decided to hand the
armband to
the team’s longest serving player.
“Mikel is the oldest serving player in
the team and it is the right thing for him to have the armband,” Musa
told ESPN FC. “This is just to correct what was done in the past.
“The most important thing for us right now is to concentrate on the
two games in front of us and make sure that we beat Egypt and qualify
for the [African] Nations Cup.”
It would be recalled that former coach Sunday Oliseh made Ahmed Musa the captain during his short, tumultous tenure.
