Students of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos State, on Wednesday
grounded activities at the institution in protest of the death of a
final year student, Ms. Comfort Dazan, who died in the college health centre.
The protesting students blamed her
death on the poor state of the college’s medical centre and the refusal
of officials at the centre to attend to her.
It was learnt that she was a Higher National Diploma II student of the Department of
Technology Management, and had been rushed to the college’s medical centre
after she fell seriously ill days ago. However, the centre demanded N35,000 for her treatment and did not attend to her because she couldn’t raise money.
She was eventually rushed to a hospital outside the school on Wednesday after her condition became worse but, unfortunately, she did not make it.
When the news of her death broke, students
took to the roads, blocking the Jibowu end of the Herbert Macaulay Road,
Yaba, singing solidarity songs and carrying placards with inscriptions
such as “This nonsense must stop.”
