At today’s gala ceremony in Zurich, the Argentinian saw off the challenge of team-mate Neymar and rival Cristiano Ronaldo to add to his successes in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Messi claimed 41pc of the votes.
Real Madrid star Ronaldo, bidding for this third award, finished second with 28pc of the vote, ahead of Neymar. It was the first time the Brazilian had been included on the short list.
