The Spanish Football Federation has expelled Real Madrid from the Copa Del Rey (The King's Cup), which is the spanish equivalent of the FA Cup. This expulsion comes after Real Madrid fielded Russian forward, Denis Cheryshev in their round of 32 win over lower league side, Cardiz, on Wednesday (December 2, 2015).
Cheryshev was supposed to serve a one-match suspension due to card accumulation from last season while he was on loan at Villareal.
Real Madrid claim they were unaware of this situation and the FA didn't intimate them beforehand about the rules; seeing as the offence was from a previous season and with a different club.
Cheryshev scored the first goal in their win over Cardiz before he was substituted after the half-time break. According to Madrid coach, Rafa benitez, it was only then he became aware of the ban and decided to substitute him to "show good faith."
The Spanish FA has now ruled that Cardiz would progress to the round of 16 in place of Real Madrid; while, Real Madrid has gone on to appeal the ruling.
