Grace Mugabe, the First Lady of Zimbabwe, has taken over from
her nonagenarian husband in the 'controversial speech' department.
Speaking at an event where she was addressing the women’s
league of the Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF), Mrs.
Mugabe, whose husband has been ruling Zimbabwe since 1980, said women’s mode of dressing is responsible for their rape.
“If you walk around wearing mini skirts displaying your
thighs and inviting men to drool over you, then you want to complain when you
have been raped? It’s unfortunate because it will be your fault.”
Mrs. Mugabe who is the secretary of the league advised women
to dress like her, “Wear clothes like Mai Mugabe or you can choose a trousers,
but not those which are too tight. These types of clothes are the signs of
moral decadence in our country.”
Her statement has drawn a lot of criticism globally from
women activists and even men. Reacting to her comments, the spokesman of
Movement for Democratic Change – Tsvangirai (MDC-T) said, “The statement by
Grace is very disgraceful and denigrating to any woman and more so coming from
a woman and the First Lady.”
