October 1st was the day Nigeria got her independence 55 years ago.
Every October 1st, many Nigerians wear fashion items that have the same colours with the national flag; Green and White.
There are many events and shows to mark our independence day. It's assumed that on that day, Nigerians are happy to celebrate independence.
Speaking with some Nigerians in Lagos State, they were angry about the fuss being made over the celebration.
A food seller I spoke with (off record) told me, "Which kain independence? Ordinary to buy something for market... if you market, you can't buy anything because it is expensive. We no suppose to be celebrating independence."
A man in her shed concurred with her saying, "na only celebrities dey celebrate. They have money. We no get money to waste for celebration. This independence no make sense."
I spoke with many other people some complained others were just impassive. Yet, there were happy people who were grateful to see the day. Different strokes for different folks.
In the midst of this, all I can write is that there is hope. Since we got independence, our country has been plagued with insensitive, self-seeking, and corrupt leaders. We hope that with PREFRRON Buhari, our country can maximize it's potentials.
We hope that on October 1st, 2016, Nigerians will sing a different and better song.
