Yesterday 18th September, the Code of Conduct
Tribunal, CCT, in Abuja, ordered Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki to
be arrested because of his refusal to appear in court following a 13-count
criminal charge preferred against him by the federal government for falsely
declaring his assets, contrary to the constitutional requirement.
The directive was given yesterday to the Nigerian Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mr. Solomon Arase to arrest the Senate President and bring him to court on Monday for arraignment.
Saraki refused to appear before the tribunal, though he
sent his team of lawyers, led by a former President of the Nigerian Bar
Association, Mr. Daudu, SAN, to file
memorandum of conditional appearance on his behalf. Ruling on the application,
the tribunal said that Saraki ,having known the constitution, ought to have shown respect to
the tribunal by appearing before it . They ordered the IGP and other security
to arraign the Senate President.
However, Saraki, yesterday, went before the Court of Appeal
in Abuja to challenge CCT to try him and asked the tribunal panel to
discharge the bench warrant for his arrest.
Saraki, insisted the trial tribunal erred in law and also acted without jurisdiction.
