Chelsea Conqueror, Everton Hero, Stephen Naismith celebrating a goal. |
English Premier League defending champions, Chelsea football
club, are having a torrid time defending
the title they won just last season.
They have just been beaten three goals to one by Everton,
courtesy of super-sub, Stephen Naismith’s hat trick. This means they have now
lost three out of their opening games this season and sit 15th on
the league table (pending the results of other matches still to be played).
The match played at Everton’s Goodison Park came after a two-week international break that many Chelsea fans had hoped would help the out-of-form players refresh and get their mojo back. But with today’s display, it seems it is still business as usual. Star players such as Ivanovic, Fabregas, Hazard, Costa and Matic (with the exception of that one moment of magic when he scored Chelsea’s only goal) appear to still be on vacation and their doppelgangers played in their place. Even Pedro’s fresh energy couldn’t save them this time.
Chelsea Manager, Jose Mourinho, would really be praying his
‘special one’ effect wears on his lads on time and they get their A-game on or
else, his post-match comments that “the results don’t match the performance and
he can’t blame himself or his players” would not be enough to save him.
As has been the norm so far this season, the Chelsea team
was lack-lustre even with the inclusion of John Mikel Obi and Kourt Zouma (who
replaced Gary Cahill) in the starting line-up. Everton quickly took advantage
of Chelsea’s disjointed defence with Naismith, who came in as a first half
substitution for the injured Besic, being the hero. He immediately scored two
first half goals within minutes of each other before Matic long range strike
reduced the deficit. He completed his hat trick minutes to the end of the match
and totally dashed Chelsea’s hope of a comeback.
So, what exactly is wrong with Chelsea? How come the same
formidable team from last season are now mediocre at best? Could it be Karma
(Read: Eva Carneiro) catching up with Jose? Maybe we should consult Ifa... Maybe.
For now, we neutrals cannot help but join in teasing them to the moon and back.
