Who says the requirements for modelling for a high fashion
label are: to be super skinny and be scantily dressed? Who says you have to
throw away your virtue and religion before you can become a fashion model? And who
says religious people cannot be fashionable?
23-year old Mariah Idrissi has come to break the stereotypes.
She is the first hijab-wearing muslim woman to be featured in an advert by none
other than the world’s second largest
fashion retailer – H&M.
The London-based model, whose ancestry is a mix of Pakistani
and Moroccan, in a recent interview promoting the ad, said “It always feels
like women who wear hijab are ignored when it comes to fashion”.
Mariah appears in an H&M ad which celebrates models of
various ethnicities, religion, body types and basically flouts all the
stereotypes and unwritten rules in fashion.
For the ad, Mariah wears a street fashion ensemble which
includes a checkered hijab and sunglasses.
I hope this would be a motivation for our highly fashionable
Nigerian hijab sisters. Keep those fabulous hijabs coming.
