Mina (name withheld) is a
16-year-old girl who has morphed from being daddy’s lass to daddy’s lover. She
said that her father asked her to date him. Shocked at his ludicrous, ribald
request, she told him that it is an abomination. An ineffable act that shouldn’t
be whispered, not to talk of being discussed.
Every night, she feels him fondle
her goodies. There are those nights she feels his weight on her. Repulsion
makes her crave the cold floor instead of the warm bed. He told her that he,
her father, was going to take her virginity. This is an excerpt from her diary:
“D THING WEY DADDY DO ME”
“One day, it was on Sunday nite. Dat was 7 June 2015. He called me and told me dat he like me so much and he told me dat he want us to be dating. I said no dat am not interested and he said dat anything wey I need I should tell him and later he told me dat I should sleep beside him, dat he want to tell me something in the dead of the nite.
“I said no, later he asked dat I am a virgin, I said yes,
he now told me dat na dat nite I go disvirgin. I was so scared dat nite. I don’t know what to do. I am very confused and he said dat I should not tell anybody d thing wey he told me. Dat night, he came and sleep beside me and start romancing me. I quickly wake up. I did not sleep go. I just close my eyes but there is one particular person dat know my mind. So, I explain everything to him so he told me dat everything will be okay and he now told me dat I should promise him dat I should not tell anybody so I promise him.”
Her mother is no more. She has
two little sisters. Her youngest sister now lives with some members of their extended family; we can't vouch that she's safer there.Her father has taken her and her younger sister as his lovers. When they
open up to tell family members, the family members tell them to forgive their
father. How can she forgive him? He has
snatched away her innocence.
Mina confides in a neighbour who later alerts the landlady.
This was how the issue came into broad daylight.
With the high rise in the
incidence of rape in the country, one is wont to ask, “What is wrong with
Nigeria?” Is it that our institutions are defunct, inactive? This week, the
media has been replete with different rape stories from all corners of the
country. Fathers, pastors, neighbours, guardians are guilty of this dastardly act.
What is the reason? What is our legal system doing about this?
There are several institutions in
the society: Marriage and family, religion, education, law, media, etc. What are
these institutions doing to help the situation?

What can we do to nip this in the
bud? What have we done so far? Does our legal system mete out adequate punitive
measures to this effect? What about the abuse cases we don't
know about? What about the mothers that molest their sons? We might not hear
about it but there are cases like that we don't report.
Let’s join hands to say no to
non-consensual sex. Lets fight rape.
